Building a pedestrian-centered Main Gate plaza
Problem
The main gate had long been a problem. It was dangerous: at every entrance and graduation ceremony, people squeezed in for photos inside a sculpture that cars drove past. And whenever SNU appeared in the news, so did a front gate full of cars; the impression of a car-centered campus was hard to shake.
Process
The plan turned the gate area into a square and moved the road aside, restoring the sculpture's original value. Some professors opposed it. Where there were misunderstandings, I cleared them up; where there was opposition, I made the case for why it was needed, and proceeded only after earning consent.
The impression that SNU's campus put cars first was impossible to shake.
Result
A square where people, not cars, walk, with the surrounding roads reorganized. The dangerous photo spot became safe pedestrian space, and SNU's first impression became an open, people-centered plaza.
